EXCERPT

Two DEA agents, both in casual attire, glanced at the woman riding by. Conner’s brief glimpse immediately became an intense stare as he wondered if Armando experienced the same observation. He dared not look away, afraid even a quick turn of his head would make her disappear. Neither spoke until she peddled past. “It couldn’t be, could it?” Armando asked first.

While tugging at the rim of his baseball cap Conner scrutinized his partner. “Then you saw what I saw!” he exclaimed. “I don’t know how it’s possible. We just left her in Cancun.” Conner’s energetic eyes studied the back of their subject with interest. Shaking his head, he continued, “No, and the hair is definitely a different color. Wow! But it sure looks like her.”

“You’re telling me. This is unbelievable! Vamos amigo,” Armando said. “Come on! Let’s follow her and get a closer look.”

With a soft jog, the twosome began following the female rider. Conner knew they should be more worried about losing her than being noticed, and within seconds, they finished jogging on the uneven wooden pier planks and stepped onto the dirt road. The agents then turned left as their target slowed.

Excerpt Number Two:

After ending the call, Kevin walked to the file cabinet and pulled out two six-inch-thick folders labeled, The Magician: File One of Two, and The Magician: File Two of Two. He returned to his seat, dropped both files on top of his desk, and began scanning their many sections. Picking up the second file, Kevin then turned to the section labeled Daniela and reached into a large pocket-style envelope to withdraw an eight-by-ten photograph. Daniela’s beauty was captivating, her look so vulnerable. How could she be related to someone as evil as Santiago? He desperately believed Daniela knew nothing about the violent crimes her brother had committed. Kevin even refused to use her last name and always referred to her simply as Daniela. He could not bear to relate the name of Santiago with someone so pure and innocent. Kevin looked down, grimacing. Am I losing control? As the special agent in charge, he understood the importance of remaining detached. Kevin knew he could not allow Daniela to affect him. Unfortunately, though, she had. From the first moment he met her, Kevin felt an attraction and worried it would cloud his judgment. Even now, as he tried to look away from her haunting image, he found his gaze glued to her picture as he lost himself in the night they first met.

Excerpt Number Three:

Alexandra pulled into the hotel parking lot several minutes after three o’clock. Mentally, she had been ready for the meeting hours before but had purposefully decided to arrive late. Not knowing what Kevin O’Neil looked like, she elected not to sit there alone while looking anxiously at every man who passed her way. She remembered him telling her not to worry and that he would greet her. But what if he’s late? She asked herself. After entering the hotel, Alexandra instantly spotted the lounge area directly past the reception hall. She held her shoulders high and tried to walk confidently, but as her heels clicked noisily upon the marble floor, she felt painfully conspicuous. She was relieved when the sound instantly muted as she descended the wide, plushy carpeted steps leading to the lounge. As she stepped into the room, Alexandra observed one server, the bartender, and a few guests scattered throughout. The only single occupant appeared to be a man whom Alexandra assumed was Agent O’Neil. As she waited a beat while further inspecting the room, he walked toward her.

Excerpt Number Four:

Alexandra walked back to the sofa, ready to resume watching the recordings. She sat down before looking up at Kevin. He stood at the door with his hand poised on the light switch.

“I’ll let you get back to work,” he said. “You can stay and keep me company if you want.”

“That would be a lot better than the piles of paperwork on my desk. But thanks anyway. I better go.”

“Kevin?” Alexandra asked, stopping him. “Do I have any privacy?”

“It’s only the phones, Alex. Not the house.”

“You know, I still don’t completely comprehend your reasoning.”

“I know you don’t, but thanks for not pushing.”

“You’re welcome.” When she pushed the play button, he flipped the light switch. When Alexandra didn’t hear his footsteps walking away, she whispered, “Kevin?”

“I’m still here,” he said from the dark.

“I’ll be okay. I know I can do this. I can really do this.”

“You know, kid.” Alexandra could hear the smile in his tone. “I never doubted you could.”

Excerpt Number Five:

Every so often while eating, Armando casually glanced in Daniela’s direction. However, he soon became distracted by his meal. After what seemed to be just a few moments, Armando was surprised when he looked up and saw Daniela walking directly toward him. She wore a matching black linen button-down blouse and wrap skirt with black espadrilles. Their ankle ties accentuated the firmness of her bare, sculptured calves. The arm openings of her sleeveless blouse were cut inwardly at an angle, revealing the graceful line of her shoulders. The skirt hit right below the knee, but as Daniela walked toward him, her movements caused the split to flap open, revealing a provocative and ample view of her inner thigh with each step. Daniela’s hair was loosely secured, with soft tendrils surrounding her face and lightly brushing against her neck. The slightly tousled look only enhanced her beauty. Armando stared helplessly, his mouth open. She stopped directly in front of him and held out a cocktail napkin. Armando could feel her perfume penetrating his body. Slowly, he accepted the napkin.

“Sssshhhh,” she whispered, while gently placing a finger over her full parted lips when he started to speak. Then she turned and seductively sauntered away.

Without breathing, Armando visually followed the languid sway of her hips as Daniela walked through the restaurant and toward the front exit.

When she finally stepped beyond their view, Conner gasped, “Wow!”

Armando remained breathless as he continued to grip the folded napkin.

“Well,” Conner pressed, “open it. What did she write?”

Still in a trance, Armando unfolded the napkin and placed it on the table. The only writing was a telephone number.

“Double wow,” Conner said. “Be still my heart!”

“My heart is not the problem.”

“Then it’s a good thing we’re leaving in the morning.”

“Morning might not be soon enough,” Armando moaned. “I can still smell her perfume!”

Conner inhaled deeply. “Oh man, me too. Did you see her skirt?”

“Who could miss it?” Armando exhaled loudly before asking, “Now how am I ever going to make it through the night? It’s going to be even more difficult knowing she’s right next door.” “How about taking a cold shower?” Conner suggested.

Disappointed, Armando nodded in agreement. “Cold shower it is.”
